Manyworlds CD/Bluray set is out!

It's out there! You get a CD with my trumpet concerto Fisher King, amazingly performed by Håkan Hardenberger, my first orchestral piece Id, and my latest orchestral piece Manyworlds. AND you get a Bluray disc with all three works in Pure Audio surround, and also Boya Bøckman's mindboggling video Manyworlds 3D, viewable in 3D if you have the equipment for it, or as a "classic" 2D version if you don't. Million thanks to Håkan H. and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds!

New CD-Blu-ray

Last touches on the cover art for the new CD/Bluray album Manyworlds on Ondine, hopefully released in May:
Fisher King, the trumpet concerto written for Håkan Hardenberger
Id, my very first orchestral work!
Manyworlds in two versions: one as a pure orchestral work, one with a stunning video based on fractal mathematics by video artist Boya Bøckmann, to be watched either in the original 3D (get out your 3D specs!) or in 2D.

Realismos mágicos!

Realismos mágicos for marimba, written for Colin Currie, is now out for sale! Buy it here!

World premiere coming up

My new piece for solo marimba which will be premiered at Wigmore Hall 7 April by Colin Currie, got the name Realismos mágicos. I borrowed the title of 11 of García Márquez' magnificent short stories and wrote 11 marimba pieces for them. These short pieces – one is only 5 seconds – are not descriptive of the plot of the stories;
they spring out of the poetry of the titles themselves:

Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormas
(A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings)
El ahogado más hermoso del mundo
(The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World)

Here's Colin blogging about the concert

Commission for Colin Currie

Wigmore Hall has commissioned a solo marimba piece for percussionist extraordinaire Colin Currie. Premiere will be in his solo recital there 7 April 2014. Co-commissioners are  Bergen International Festival and Sound Festival Scotland.

Punkt Festival

Punkt Festival is an innovative music festival in Kristiansand in the south of Norway. The festival concept is centered around a stage/studio hybrid called the Alpha Room.
The multi-channel sound from the Punkt Festival Main Stage is transferred to The Alpha Room, where the audience can go to listen to the interpretation of the concert they just heard. In this intimate setting, the music is immediately remixed by acclaimed musicians, producers and remixers.
7 September – on my birthday by the way – I am invited to remix Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft's concert.

Mainly New - RAM

17 October 2013: The next concert in the Mainly New series at the Royal Academy of Music will be a Wallin portrait concert. I will also hold a lecture there the day before.

New Orchestra CD

Although you will have to wait for it, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra is in the process of making a new CD with my orchestral music. Following the concert  20 February 2014 with my trumpet concerto and my very first orchestral piece Id (31 years old now!), these pieces will be recorded. The solo trumpet part will be taken wonderfully care of by Håkan Hardenberger. Manyworlds, a piece that was commissioned by the Bergen Phil and the NDR Symphonieorchester, was already recorded at the premiere in 2010. The conductor for the whole CD is the Finnish force of nature John Storgårds.

Strange News on tour again

Strange News is touring again, this time in Netherlands and Belgium. Saturday 9 November during November Musik festival (lots of Scandinavian stuff there this year!), and 13 November in deSingel, Antwerp. Both concerts are all-Wallin concerts featuring chamber music pieces, played by the Hermes Ensemble and – as always – the young Ugandan actor Arthur Kisenyi.

Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition

7-14 June 2013, I will be in the jury of the 4th Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition.  Bamberger Symphony Orchestra. My orchestral piece Act will be on the repertoire for the competition, along with works by Haydn, Berg and Ligeti, and, of course, several works by Gustav Mahler.
